Potato Picking

Let me introduce you one of the most important and most beautiful traditions of Polish villagers. Every year, families gather at the field and collect potatoes, together. We so call it „wykopki”. My dear neighbour, Mr Władek invites us to join him, every year. Digging out potatoes is not the easiest thing to do, but it’s fun and bonding. We collect the potatoes from the soil, walking in rows after the horse that drags a special tool (called podbieraczka) - don’t worry, the horse seems very happy to do it. At the end of the day, the head of the family invites us for a home-made vodka, made of potato, of course, and we sit around a bonfire sharing baked potatoes and bigos (traditional cabbage stew). The vibe of that day will remain…

Mr Władek spent all his life farming, being one of the last farmers in the neighborhood. He’s the one that carries the tradition of Polish village life. It’s not easy, though. Selling organically grown veggies is tough job to do, so I thought that we could help him out - you’re invited to join wykopki and all the money collected will go directly to Mr Władek - in exchange you’ll get a 15 kg bag of potatoes, great food and a smile on your face for the rest of the weekend. See you at the field!

PS. Can’t come but still would like to support Mr Władek? I’m happy to deliver the potatoes to Kraków - you can pick them up from Salwator. Let me know!

Hello! I’m Marta, I'm sculptor, but i also love cooking. I’ve always enjoyed sharing my knowledge of my beautiful home town, Krakow, both through the website I run eataway.com and with all the wonderful travellers I meet in person.

I also love cooking. That means delicious, home-made food freshly-prepared for my family and friends, and fun evenings of conversation and shared experiences. I’ve often thought when travelling myself how great it would be to have a meal with a local person.

Restaurants are great, but sometimes it seems it would be better to enjoy a home-cooked meal with someone who can also tell me a bit more about their experiences, their lives and their cities. So, I’ve decided to do exactly that. I cook for up to 8 people at my home in Krakow every Wednesday from around 7pm. And you’re invited. Please join me!
